Overview

JABA's FISH (Friends In Schools Helping) Program gives volunteers of all ages the opportunity to make a difference in our public schools.  We work with principals and teachers to identify students who are "academically at-risk."  Then we recruit, train, place and support FISH volunteers who work on-one-one and in small groups with the students.  Most FISH tutors help students with reading, math and English as a second language.  We also help 4 year olds get off to a good start in school.  FISH is an early-intervention, dropout prevention program because we work with elementary school students.  Funds are needed to expand the successful FISH program to additional students in Charlottesville City and Albemarle County schools and surrounding rural counties in central Virginia. The need is real, the students are willing.  We need funds to recruit and train more volunteer tutors.

Budget Notes: We are not asking for rent, utilities, mileage, and other program costs. These costs will be covered by the nonprofit sponsoring agency, JABA. Our funding request is for part time staff, including additional Americorp VISTA volunteers, who will recruit additional volunteers for students.
